How to reduce the silly season stress

With 2020 being a different silly season for many and one that may be full of uncertainties, you’ll want to read this article and ground this year.

There’s no denying that the Silly Season can be a stressful and emotional time for people and with so many people separated from their loved ones this year, it’s likely that 2020 will bring up a lot of shit for people.

Whilst this time of year can be about celebration, gatherings and family time, it can also be a time of loss and missing those family members/friends that have passed away.

This year too, with added restrictions, it’s fair to say that the season to be jolly may just be the season to be frustrated as HELL. In California, the restrictions, in my opinion are just down right ridiculous and I’m sure it’ll look similar in a lot of other cities around the world (except for Sweden because they seem to have their head screwed on). The idea that at the end of November for Thanksgiving, people will eat outside, have a 6 foot distance between everyone not in their household and that seating must be 6 foot apart is just fucking dumb. Oh also, don’t forget to serve your food in single serve containers, if you are serving food or drinks you must wear a face covering and you cannot have food platters.

Anything else? Oh also, wear a blindfold and a nappy.

Combine the silly season stress with decision overwhelm and you’ve got a recipe for a pretty crappy holiday season.

BUT! I’m here to help. Whilst some of us aren’t afraid to break the rules so that we can have a little fun, others want to follow them.

A few things to consider:

  • If you are away from your family, how about a friend-mas?! (this is what I’ll be doing!)
  • What things make you happy around the Holidays? For me, adding seasonal decor to my house has been such a mood-booster
  • Don’t think too much about it. I know I always say, feel your feelings. But the reality is for a lot of us that the homesick-ness is too much. And so not thinking about it is actually more helpful and we can do the trauma release around it after COVID is over.
  • Reach out of your friends and family that live nearby and make sure you have a backup plan if you can’t go and see your family.

If you are fortunate enough to have a pretty normal Holiday period with your friends and family, you still probably need support protecting your energy.

Remember that you never have to eat someone else’s food out of obligation. If you know Aunt Sally’s stuffing is going to make you feel yucky after, don’t eat it. You don’t owe it to her and if she takes in personally, that’s her own stuff to move through!

Remember that eating too much a few times in a year isn’t going to kill you. It’s what makes the holidays so much fun! That post Turkey food coma is almost a bonding exercise LOL.

Also, ensure that you are keeping up with your practises. It’s so easy to let them slide during this season of the year but they are what’s going to keep your grounded, still and secure in your body. So your exercise, meditation, journaling, dancing, self pleasure etc. needs to be a non-negotiable like Christmas movies!

Drawing boundaries are also something that I would highly encourage you to start practises so that you feel safe to embody them over this season (head to page 27).
